The research is a compilation, reproduction, and database organization for two historic maps of Bangkok. One is the cadastral map at the scale of 1:1000 that the Survey Department made in 1907 when it was under the Ministry of Agriculture; the other the 1: 5000-scaled map of the city made by the same department in 1932 when it was under the Ministry of Defense. The research team gathered 192 sheets of the 1907 maps, and 34 sheets of the 1932 maps from map repositories and archives in Bangkok, including the Land Department, the Royal Thai Survey Department, the National Library, and the National Archives of Thailand. After an initial inventory, each set of maps was subsequently digitized and studied. A new cartographical framework was created by combining the 1907 map’s coverage with the 1932 map’s coordinate system. The result is a database consisting of two sets of 1: 5000 maps, covering the city proper from Chao Phraya river to the west, Samsen Canal to the north, and the Khorat Railway Line to the east. The database also includes an index of place names from both maps. The cartographic database will be a significant contribution to the urban and architectural history research in the future.
