วิทยานิพนธ์นี้เป็นการศึกษาตำนานปรัมปราในสังคมวัฒนธรรมไทย โดยประยุกต์วิธีการศึกษาแบบโครงสร้างนิยมของโคลด เลวี่-สเตราส์เป็นแนวทางในการวิเคราะห์ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อตีความสัญลักษณ์และวิเคราะห์สารสำคัญที่สะท้อนจากตำนานปรัมปราไทย ผู้วิจัยแบ่งประเภทตำนานปรัมปราไทยออกเป็นประเภทใหญ่ ๆ ได้ 4 ประเภทคือ 1) ตำนานปรัมปราที่อธิบายธรรมชาติหรือปรากฏการณ์ธรรมชาติ ซึ่งประกองด้วย ตำนานสร้างโลก ตำนานข้าว ตำนานสุริยคราสและจันทรคราส และตำนานฝน 2) ตำนานปรัมปราที่อธิบายเป็นมาของผู้นำทางวัฒนาธรรมและเมืองโบราณ ซึ่งประกอบด้วยตำนานวีรบุรุษ และตำนานเมือง 3) ตำนานปรัมปราที่อธิบายการเผยแผ่พุทธศาสนาในดินแดนไทย-ไท ซึ่งประกอบด้วยตำนานพระธาตุ ตำนานพระพุทธบาท และตำนานพระพุทธรูป และ 4) ตำนานปรัมปราที่อธิบายประเพณีพิธีกรรม การวิเคราะห์เชิงโครงสร้างทำให้เห็นว่า ตัวละครในตำนานปรับปราไทยจำแนกออกได้เป็น 4 กระบวนทัศน์ใหญ่ ๆ คือ ตัวละครในกระบวนทัศน์ของความเชื่อดั้งเดิม ตัวละครในกระบวนทัศน์ของชนกลุ่มต่าง ๆ ตัวละครในกระบวนทัศน์ของความเชื่อทางพุทธศาสนา และตัวละครในกระบวนทัศน์ของตัวเชื่อม ซึ่งพฤติกรรมสัญลักษณ์ที่แสดงความสัมพันธ์ของตัวละครต่าง ๆ เหล่านี้ กลุ่มหนึ่งได้สะท้อนให้เห็นความขัดแย้งและการยอมรับในเรื่องของกันของคนทั้งที่เป็นคนกลุ่มเดียวกันและคนต่างกลุ่มชาติพันธ์ ผลกาวิจัยสรุปได้ว่า ตำนานปรัมปราไทยได้สะท้อนให้เห็นปมปัญหาขัดแย้งในใจของบรรพชนไทยในเรื่องการเลือกรับนับถือศาสนาระหว่างความเชื่อดั้งเดิมกับพุทธศาสนาประการหนึ่ง และเรื่องของการสร้างความสัมพันธ์กับคนภายในกลุ่มและคนต่างกลุ่มอีกประการหนึ่ง การวิเคราะห์ตำนานปรัมปราไทยในเชิงโครงสร้างนี้ยังทำให้เข้าใจถึงมูลเหตุที่คนไทยหันมายอมรับนับถือพุทธศาสนา ทั้งยังสามารถนำมาอธิบายสังคมไทยที่มีลักษณะของสังคมแห่งการประนีประนอมได้อีกด้วย การวิจัยนี้จึงเป็นการชี้ให้เห็นถึงคุณค่าของตำนานปรัมปราไทยทั้งในแง่ของการเป็นข้อมูลที่บันทึกร่องรอยความขัดแย้งเกี่ยวกับความคิดความเชื่อทางศาสนาและความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างชนกลุ่มต่าง ๆ และการเป็นข้อมูลที่สามารถนำมาอธิบายลักษณะที่เป็นจริงของสังคมไทยได้ แม้ตำนานปรัมปราไทยจะถูกมองว่าเป็นเรื่องเหนือจริงก็ตาม
This thesis focuses on the study of Thai myths by applying C laude L.vi-Strauss’s Structural Approach. The purpose of the study is to interpret the symbols embedded in the text and to analyze the important messages reflected from Thai myths. The researcher classifies Thai myths into 4 groups; 1) Myths that explain nature or natural phenomenon consists of creation myth, rice myth, solar and lunar eclipse myth, and rain myth. 2) Myths that explain origin of culture hero or ancient p lace consists of myth of culture hero, and myth of ancient places. 3) Myths that explain the incoming of Buddhism to Thai-Tai region consists of myth of the Buddha’s relics, myth of the Buddha’s footprint, and myth of the Buddha’s images. 4) Myths that explain tradition and ritual. The structural analysis demonstrates that the characters in Thai myths can be classified into 4 paradigms, namely, the characters in the paradigm of indigenous beliefs, of the peoples, of Buddhism, and of the mediators. The relationship between these characters, thus, reflects the denial and the acceptance of indigenous beliefs and Buddhism; and of the conflict and com promise between of various indigenous groups. The study reveals that the important messages reflected from the myths concern the conflict in the minds of Thai ancestors wondering whether they should respect the supernatural pow er or the Lord Buddha and the conflict concerning the relationship with the peoples of various ethnic groups. Moreover, by using structural approach to analyze Thai myths, it helps explain why Thai people changed from respecting indigenous beliefs to the adopting of Buddhism, and it can be used to explain the characteristics of Thai society which tends to be the society that compromises rather than prolongs the conflicts. This research thus exemplifies how myths can be used as data to study the cultural conflicts and as useful materials to explain certain characteristics of Thai society.
