(The Augustinian Type of Solution) (The Irenaean Type of Solution)
Purposes: The purposes of this research are, firstly, to study the meaning of “Evil” in Christian religion, to study why “Evil” becomes one of the most important problems in Christian religion and to evaluate the importance of the problem; secondly, to study the solutions of the problem proposed by the Christian philosophers. Procedures: The author collected data from books and other printed materials concerning the problem, which can be divided into two types: (1) Primary Sources which are the writings of the philosophers themselves; (2) Secondary Sources which are the writings of the commentators. Conclusion: “Evil” means what man does not desire, what man hates and tries to avoid. There are three kinds of evil in Christian religion. (1) Moral evil or sin. This kind of evil is the sin of man against his God, by not believing in Him or lacking faith in Him. (2) Physical evil. This kind of evil is the cruel aspect of the universe believed to be the punishment from god for man’s sin. (3) Metaphysical evil. This kind of evil is the finiteness of man as a creature. The finiteness of man is his mortality, his ignorance, etc. “Evil” becomes one of the most important problem of Christian religion, because the existence of evil is inconsistent with the Christian doctrine of God’s nature. The Christian religion, as a monotheistic religion, has the fundamental doctrine that there is only one omnipotent God who created all things. Anyway, He is not cruel, because He is not only omnipotent, but also benevolent. Moreover, God is omniscient and takes care of everything in the universe. Therefore, as the Omnipotent, He can create a perfect universe without any taint of evil; as the Benevolent, He must love man and desire that man face on evil; as the omniscient, He can foreknow man’s sin, so He must prevent it. Accordingly, man and his universe, as the creatures of an omnipotent, benevolent and omniscient God, should face no evil at all. In fact, man faces it; the universe is full of cruel events; man sins; man dies and is ignorant. Why? Why is the universe full of troubles in spite of God’s infinite power? Why does man suffer so much in spite of God’s infinite kindness? Why does man sin so frequently in spite of God’s infinite wisdom? Or otherwise, is not God really omnipotent?; is not God really good?; is not God really omniscient?; these are all impossible view-points for the Christians, because they are inconsistent with the doctrine of God. Christianity, therefore, is inescapable from the challenge of the problem of evil. The problem of evil is very important for the Christians, because they can not reject the doctrine of their religion, nor can they reject the fact of evils they face in everyday life. The problem of evil in Christian philosophy, therefore, consists in reconciling the seemingly contradictory factors in Christian life. Having studied the solutions of the eight Christian philosophers, the author found out that there are two types of solutions. They are: (1) the Augustinian type, (2) the Irenaean type. Both types of solution have one common feature: such philosophers do not persuade the Christians to reject the fact of evils, but to accept them as they are. What they try to do is to persuade with many reasons that man should not hate nor avoid evils. They are, in fact, necessary and useful for man and the universe. This is the view-point of the optimists. Their solutions are successful in the sense that they can solve the contradiction between the fact of evils and the doctrine of God. Anyone needs not leave out any requirement; he needs not reject the fact of evils in order to be a Christian; he needs not reject Christianity in order to be sincere to fact. Therefore, the Christian doctrine is not weakened by the problem of evil nor the fact of evils, because God and evils are not really in conflict. Suggestions: The solutions of the problem studied are not final. Therefore, a Christian or anyone who is interested in this problem should do further researches to find more satisfied solution or solutions, because, as we know there is no universal consent for a philosophical problem. A new prospect in philosophy usually leads to a new aspect of this problem too. Therefore, this interesting problem should be encouraged to more study.
