This thesis is the outcome of a research work on the Maleyyadevattheravatthu, incorporating an edition of the Sukhothai version of the text, a Thai translation and a critical study on its contents, its sources, versions and authors. It is found in the course of the research that the original Maleyyadevattheravatthu was composed by a Burmese monk probably between the 10th and the 12th century A.D. The contents are deriven from Sahassevatthupakarana, Rasavahini, Mahavansa with additional details taken from the Tipitaka. Two other noteworthy versions of the text were subsequently composed in Thailand, one in Lanna area, the other in Sukhothai. The thesis is divided into 5 chapters. The first chapter is a general introduction, stating the primary objectives of the work and the research method adopted. Then follows the history on the text based on the collected data. The conditions of the manuscripts, the nature of scribal errors and calligraphical remarks are also given in this chapter, The second chapter gives the text of the Sukhothai version of the Maleyyadevattheravatthu as edited from the manuscripts now preserved in the National Library of Thailand, the Bibliotheque Nationale de Paris and the Institut Bouddhique de Pnom-Penh. Chapter 3 is the variant reading on the edition. The Thai translation is given in chapter 4 and the conclusion in chapter 5, where it is suggested that further research may be appropriately conducted utilizing additional manuscripts found in Lanna Thai, in the northeastern part and the central part of Thailand.
