The purpose of this thesis was, firstly, to study the cataloguing and classifying manuals of 13 university libraries in Thailand used for audio-visual materials, secondly, study the rules of cataloguing entries for describing audio-visual materials, thirdly, to study the problems of cataloguing and classifying audio-visual materials in the university libraries and, fourthly, to present viewpoints and recommendations for cataloguing and classifying those materials. The hypothesis which served as a guide for this study were: 1) the university libraries in Thailand used different rules in cataloguing and classifying audio-visual materials. 2) the university libraries in Thailand had different problems in this technical work. The methodology used in this study included methods of interview schedule and questionnaires completed by 14 authorities in charge of cataloguing and classifying audio-visual materials in 13 university libraries. The data gathered were analysed by using frequencies, means, standard deviation and a Chi-Square test. The condlusions drawn from the study are: 1. The university libraries in Thailand use different cataloguing rules. Eight of them use the AACR 2 and five of them use the AACR 1. Some university libraries use several cataloguing rules and manuals together for audio-visual materials. The classification method which every university library use to sort audio-visual materials are coding and accession number. The English namual for subject headings is The Library of Congress Subject Headings, while The Thai manuals which most libraries use are the manuals of Thai Library Association and Thammasat University Library, as neither of them cover enough subject headings for audio-visual materials. 2. The University libraries in Thailand face some problems in cataloguing audio-visual materials with degree of freedom at 22 and there is a significant difference at the .05 level. The problems mostly faced are the incompleteness in information for cataloguing entries and the lack of sufficient knowledge and background in this field. In summary, the following major recommendations emerged from this study are: 1. The university libraries in Thailand should use the AACR2 and code of audio-visual materials determined by Academic Librarian Group as a Standard for all university libraries in their resources sharing. 2. Academic Librarian Group should provide a training program for librarians in audio-visual materials cataloguing according to AACR2. 3. Academic Librarian Group should determine the fromat for necessary information in describing audio-visual materials that were produced by the libraries. 4. Academic Librarian Group, instructors of audio-visual materials cataloguing, instructors of audio-visual materials, or audio-visual materials academics should determine necessary technical description for the audio-visual materials cataloguing. 5. Cataloguers of audio-visual materials should have the degree in Library Science plus some experiences in printed materials cataloguing beforehand. 6. Audio-visual materials should be catalogued according to the appropriate rules in Library Science.
