The objective of this thesis are: to study and compile subject headings for Thai books used in the 10 university libraries in Thailand; to study problems of librarians in assigning subject heading for Thai books; to evaluate the list of subject headings for Thai books used by each library and to analyze these problems so as to make recommendations, the 10 university libraries studied were: Kasetsart university, Main Library; Konkarn university Central library; Chulalongkorn University Central library: Chiengmai university Central library; Thammasart university Central libraly; Siriraj Medical library, Mahidol university; Prasarnmit library, Srinacarintraraviroj university; Silpakorn university Central library; and the library and information Centre, National institute of development administration. The research methods used in this thesis were documentary research through books and printed materials concerning subject headings; interviewing librarians about the problems of subject headings for Thai books; and compilations of subject headings which are different from those in the subject heading list “Subject Headings for Thai Books by The Thai Library Association,2513 B.E.” The subject headings studied were divided into groups. The major problems and principles were analysed and some recommendations were presented Research results are as follows: The major problems of subject headings for Thai books are: the lack of up-to-date list of subject headings for Thai books since no institutions take responsibility for this work and the lack of cooperation among librarians. The study of subject headings used in the 10 university libraries reveal that the total headings used in the 10 university libraries reveal that the total headings number 6,241, of which 314 cases presented different problems. The acute problem lies in the use of words or phrases of the same or similar meanings which make up 106 cases. The proposed list of subject headings for Thai books resulted from this study is appended.
