The main purpose of this study is to research for problem in campus planning in Thailand and to lay out a master plan for King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology at Ladkrabang. Although Thailand has had higher education for almost 60 years, only a few universities have long-term planning program. The situation has damaged the education and economy of the country. It is essential to provide a master plan for the campus of the King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology which has recently been established. To formulate concepts and oritcria for campus planning the following studies were made: 1. A comparative analysis of the system of higher education in Great Britain, United States and Thailand. 2. Investigating the pattern of growth and changes over times of Universities in Thailand and other countries. 3. Examining the basic physical elements and their relations of campuses. 4. A survey of the past and present conditions of King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang Campus in various aspects such as land use, building structure, its population characteristics, sence of community and social life as well as the results of education. The following general findings and recommendation can be concluded : 1. The lack of long-term academic planning and campus master plans widens the gap between social needs and education responsibility. The growth of universities should be planned. 2. The social and physical environments of campus can inserts significant impacts upon academic results. A greater social opportunity in campus should be recognized. 3. The spatial relationship between the residential and academic facilities is an importance factor in the academic performance of students. A proposal for King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology : 1. The Ladkrabang campus should prepare additional land for future expansion. The piece of land on the south between Klong Pravet and Soi Onnuj should be comed by the University. 2. The present looking social and residential faoilities is rather critical. By all mean, they should be provided within a decade to become a complete education community. 3. The social activities should be located at the center of the campus linking both the academic and residential zone. 4. It should be a pedestrian community. Vehicular interference would be minimized. 5. The greatest walking distance (vertical and horizontal) between various units of the academic core should not be more than a 10-minute walk. The academic facilities thus can serve a cross registration education function. 6. A part of the land should be allocated for income producing activities such as shopping facilities. Thus the University can be more independent form the government in terms of financial support.
