The study of "Information Technology and Its Role in the Development of Thai Society," was conducted by quality research method in which data were collected from depth interview of executives in Thai government and private sectors, both those who involve in national policies and academic and professional experts in computer application. Additionally, data were gathered from a number of related document and paper. The purpose of the research is to study the following: 1) General condition of computer application, a kind of information technology and innovation, in Thai Governmental offices. 2) Status and effects of information technology on national development. 3) problem and obstacles of I.T. 4) Trends of I.T. in Thai government offices in future. From the research, it was found that 1) Most of Thai government offices have computers enough for use and microcomputer is the most popular kind, Computers have been applied far general or clercical work mainly, especially among offices is apparently little. No unified information center has been witnesses; and there has been overlapping data collection and filing in many offices. 2) In general, information technology has brought about positive rather negative either on the efficiency of office work (organizational work) or on interpersonal relations among members. However, it has not had widespread effect on national development yet and has not been used to serve public needs widely. (Therefare, it plays more role in improving internal work). 3) Main problems of computer application are the staffs' readiness and expertise in computer utilization. Almost all of Thai government offices lack personnels in such a field. Moreover, national budget for computers has always been insufficient and approval process is still time-consuming and very complicating. No standard data collection system is another major problem for Thai governmental offices. 4) In future, most offices plan to expand their computer application into wider and more efficient system, Offer more public service and information interchange, etc.
