The objectives of this thesis are to investigate and compare the acoustic characteristics of Bangkok Thai tones produced by Pattani Malay children of 6-7 years old living in the provinces of Bangkok (MBKK) and Pattani (MPTN) and also to test the perceptual efficiency of tones produced by those two groups of speakers by Bangkok Thai native speakers. The acoustic characteristics studied in this thesis are the fundamental frequency (F0), the F0 range, and the duration. The data was collected from 10 speakers, 5 speakers in each group. The five tones produced by Bangkok Thai native speakers were also studied in order to be used as references. The task used in the perception study was an identification task. The tones produced by those two groups of Pattani Malay children were used as the stimuli by using two types of test, the three-choice test and the five-choice test. The behavior of F0 shows that the F0 shapes of Tone2 (low), Tone3 (falling), and Tone5 (rising) of the three groups of speakers were not significantly different. The shape of Tone1 (mid) of the MBKK group was mid-falling, in the MPTN group was lower-mid and also mid-falling. The shape of Tone4 (high) of the MBKK group was mid-rising-falling and the shape of Tone4 of the MPTN group was mid-rising-falling and mid-rising. Furthermore, it was also found that the F0 range of the contour tone was wider than that of the level tone. There was a relationship between the behavior of duration and the F0 height of the tone, i.e. the duration of the tone with increasing values at the end (Tone4, Tone5) was longer than that of the tone with decreasing values at the end (Tone2, Tone3). The differences between the F0, F0 range and duration of Tone1 and Tone2 were not statistically significant in both of the MBKK group and the MPTN group. The F0 and duration of Tone3 and Tone5 in each group were significantly different. In the perception test, 30 listeners were able to correctly identify all five tones produced by two groups of Pattani Malay children in both of the three-choice test and the five-choice test. The listeners could identify Tone4 from the others in the level tone group but there was confusion between Tone1 and Tone2 and they could identify Tone3 and Tone5 in the contour tone group from each other and the other tones.
