The purpose of this thesis was to study artistic expression through drawing and painting of seven to nine years old Thai Muslim students in elementary schools under the Office of Private Education Commission in the south border provinces. The sample group included 315 seven to nine years old Thai Muslim students at Prathomsuksa 2, 3 and 4 in academic year 2000. The instruments used in this study were constructed and administered by the researcher basing on the Artistic Development theory of Viktor Lowenfeld. The instuments included 1) a questionnaire, 2) a drawing and painting test, and 3) a drawing and painting evaluation checklist. The obtained data was analyzed by a group of 2 experts, 3 art teachers and the researcher. The results presented by means of frequencies and percentages. The findings revealed that Thai Muslim students had the drawing and painting abilities at the Schematic Stage of the Artistic Development Theory of Viktor Lowenfeld. The students’ expressions were as followed : 1. Human Figure : Thai Muslim students’ most expressed characteristic was frontal depiction drawing (90.47 percent). The least expressed characteristic was drawing important parts to be in large size and no drawing for unimportant details (13.33 percent). 2. Space : Thai Muslim students’ most expressed characteristic was flat two dimensional drawing (95.23 percent). The least expressed characteristic was Egocentric or the X-ray drawing (21.26 percent). 3. Color : Thai Muslim students’ most expressed characteristic was coloring freely ( 92.96 percent ).The least expressed characteristic was cloth decoration or other details (21.26 percent ). 4. Design : Thai Muslim students’ most expressed characteristic was painting freely and independently (97.46 percent). The least expressed characteristic was the drawing of objects with specific forms and decorative objects such as utensils, hair-styles and bracelets (13.65 percent).
