The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of an activity therapy on the self-esteem of children with attention-dificit/hyperactivity disorder. The sample consisted of children aged 9-12 years who visited the child psychiatry outpatient clinic, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, and have been diagnosed as having attention-dificit/hyperactivity disorder. Subjects were assigned into 2 groups by simple random sampling. The experimental group of 12 children participated in activity therapy while the control group of the same number of children participated in recreation activity. The instrument used in this study was the modified coopersmith self-esteem inventory, school form. Subjects filled out the inventory at the beginning and at the end of the activity period, and at 6-week follow up. Data were analyzed by t-test. The results of the study were as follows: for the experimental group, the self-esteem scores at the end of activity therapy and at 6-week follow up were significantly higher than atthe beginning of the study (p<0.1). For the control group, there was no significant change in the self-esteem scores. The comparison of self-esteem scores between both groups revealed no significant difference either as the start and at the end of the activity period and at 6-week follow up.
