The objective of this thesis is to study the outstanding characteristics of Phra Abhai Mani in three main aspects: theme, characterization, symbolism and imagery. Chapter 1 is concerned with the writer’s interest in the New Criticism, as being applied to the works of Sunthorn Phoo, particularly to Phra Abhai Mani. Chapter 2 traces four sub-themes; they are adventure, pursuit of study, separation of the characters and family conflicts. The characters gain experience from adventure to become ideal persons both in personal and social aspects. The second theme is concerned with the first: that is to prepare the characters for their adventure. The separation of the characters and family conflicts go together, and they are probably influenced by the life of Sunthorn Phoo. Each sub-theme which has close relation to each other shows the characteristics of Thai literature and the notable individuality of Sunthorn Phoo. Chapter 3 is an attempt to point out the typical characteristics which makes the characters in Phra Abhai Mani distinguished from those in other literary works. These characters have their own individuality that makes them real. Chapter 4 is the study of symbolism and imagery that recur in the story. The symbols of the sea and the flute music symbolize desolation and loneliness that have influence on the spiritual background of the characters and themes. The last chapter deals with the classification of Phra Abhai Mani according to the universal classification of literature. The writer of this thesis comes to the conclusion that Phra Abhai Mani should be grouped in the romance category that seems to fit with Thai literary term – Rueng Pralomlok.
