This thesis is a study of the characteristics and the structure of the quantity phrase in Thai within the Generative Transformational Framework which was proposed by Noam Chomsky in Aspects of the Theory of Syntax (1965). The study aims at identifying the number of constituents of the quantity phrase and their syntactic relations. The study, moreover, includes the selectional restrictions governing the co-occurrence of lexical items in the quantity phrase. The analysis allows us to propose a generalization about the quantity phrase in Thai as follows. 1. There are two types of quantity phrase: ordinal phrase and cardinal phrase. The former can be sup-classified into two sub-types: quantified end unquantified ordinal phrases. 2. Six types of constituents are identified in the surface representation of quantity phrase. Four of these are main constituent while the rest are modifying constituents. 3. Four phrase structure rules can be proposed to account for the underlying structure of the quantity phrase. Seven Transformational rules to account for the surface behavior of the quantity phrase and twenty-two redundancy rules to account for the co-occurrence of lexical items in the quantity phrase.
