The purpose of this quasi-experimental research study was to examine the effect of nursing intervention by using self-selected distraction technique on pain caused by venipuncture in early adolescents with cancer. The subjects were 50 early adolescents, aged 10-15 years old, visited to the out patients oncology clinic. The control group received routine nursing care while the experimental group received the nursing intervention by using self-selected distraction technique. Research instruments included the nursing intervention by using self-selected distraction technique, the demographic data and the visual analogue scale. All instruments passed content validity. The reliability of the visual analogue pain scale was 0.99. Data analyzed by descriptive statistics and independent t-test. The results shown that the mean score of pain caused by venipuncture in early adolescents with cancer in the experimental group was lower than that in the control group at the significant level of .05 Application of this result can be applied by pediatric nurses to promote the use of self-selected distraction technique to relieve pain caused by venipuncture in early adolescents
