The purposes of this quasi–experimental research were comparison of Health – Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) of elderly patient with COPD between the experimental group and control group, and comparison of Health – Related Quality of Life of the experimental group before and after receiving the symptom management and meditation program. The total sample consisted of 36 elderly patients with COPD attending out patients clinic at Khuntan Hospital. The subjects were equally assigned to the experimental group and the control group. Both groups were matched by sex, age, and severity of COPD. The control group received the Conventional Nursing Care while the experimental group received the Symptom Management and Meditation Program. Instruments of this study were: Symptom Management and Meditation Program based on the Symptom Management Model and the Meditation Program. The program comprised of four steps: 1) assessment of patient’s symptom experience 2) knowledge innovation 3) self-symptom management skill development and 4) evaluation for symptom management. The instrument for data collection was Health – Related Quality of Life which was assessed by using Medical Outcomes Study Short form (SF-36). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistic and t-test.
The major findings were as follows: 1. The Quality of life score of the elderly COPD with in the experimental group, after received the Symptom Management and Meditation Program was significantly higher than that of before received the program. (p < .05) 2. The Quality of life score of the elderly COPD with in the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group. (p < .05)
