The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to compare maternal behavior to prevent breast feeding jaundice in full term neonate between mothers receiving coaching program and those receiving usual care. The participants were mothers and their healthy full term neonate weighed not less than 2,500 grams and gestational age between 37 and 42 weeks. Subjects were assigned to the control group first, then to the experimental group, 20 pairs each. Groups were matched by educational level, experience in caring for full term jaundice neonate and level of social support. The experimental group received coaching program, and the control group received routine nursing care. The coaching program consisted of activity guideline manual, a handbook for breast feeding jaundice prevention, flipchart and lesson plan. The intervention was reviewed for content validity by a panel of experts. Maternal skills to prevent breast feeding jaundice was evaluated to monitor the intervention effect. Its interrater-reliability was at 1. The questionnaire of maternal behavior to prevent breast feeding jaundice was used to collect the data. Its Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was at .91. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent t-test.
