Objectives: This paper described the development and psychometric testing of nurse manager competency scale. Sample: The multi-stage random sampling was used for 3 groups of participants, Nurse managers (n=310) Directors of nursing (n=15), nurse managers (n=15) and nurses (n=15) Instruments: 3 questionnaires were developed for this study. The first questionnaire was used to indicate competency of nurse manager from expert groups. A Likert scale of 1-5 was added to list in the second and third questionnaires. Method: The instruments tested for content validity and reliability by Cronbach’s alpha coefficients. Psychometric validation of nurse manager competency scale included: construct validity, inter-rater reliability and internal consistency. Construct validity using Principal Components Extraction and Orthogonal Rotation with Varimax Method. Inter rater reliability (evaluators were director of nursing, nurse managers and registered nurses) were analyzed by Intraclass Correlation. Internal consistency using Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient.
Research findings were as follows: 1. The variation of performance appraisal from can be explained 72.898% from the change in six component consecutively; 1) Strategic planning 2) Emotional intelligence 3) Communication and interpersonal skill 4) Human resource management 5) Talent Development and 6) Information technology. 2. The CVI = .80, α = .98, X bar =.404, SD = .40 and ICC = .89 The model can represent a correlation between the appraisal by oneself, Directors and subordinates
Conclusion: The research findings provide strong evidence of validity and reliability of the nurse manager scale
