This study is a descriptive research. The purpose of the study was to examine acute confusion state in mechanically ventilated patients, and the relationships among albumin, heamatocrit, oxygen saturation, pain , quality of sleep, and acute confusion state in mechanically ventilated patients admitted in intensive care units. Study samples consist of 100 mechanically ventilated patients admitted in intensive care units selected by a purposive sampling from the hospitals in the south of Thailand. The instruments included a demographic data and illness form, the Confusion Assessment Method for ICU: CAM-ICU (2010), a pain scale, and a quality of sleep questionnaires adapted from Pattareiya Kaewphang (2004). Content validity of the instruments were reviewed by a panel of experts. Internal consistency reliability of CAM-ICU determined by inter-rater reliability was .80 , and a quality of sleep questionnaires determined by Cronbach’s alpha was .87. Frequency, percentage , mean, standard deviation ,point biserial correlation coeffecient were used for statistical analysis. Results of the study showed that : 1.Twenty percents of the samples had acute confusion state whose the onset of acute confusion state was 1-3 day after being admitted in intensive care unit; average duration time 2 days ( x̅ = 2, SD = 1.38 ); maximum day: 5 days and minimum day : 1 day. 2.There were negatively statistical correlation between haematocrit and acute confusion state in mechanically ventilated patients admitted in intensive care units (rb = -.420; p< .01) 3.There were negatively statistical correlation between oxygen saturation and acute confusion state in mechanically ventilated patients admitted in intensive care units (rb = -.321; p< .01) 4.There were positively statistical correlation between quality of sleep and acute confusion state in mechanically ventilated patients admitted in intensive care units (rb =.408; p< .01) 5.There were no statistical correlation between albumin , pain and acute confusion state in mechanically ventilated patients admitted in intensive care units.
