การศึกษาการเข้าร่วมในกำลังแรงงานของผู้สูงอายุในเขตกรุงเทพมหานคร / สุรพันธุ์ เล้าวิวัฒนา = The study of labour force participation of the elderly in Bangkok / Surapun Laowiwattana
The work is aimed to study the form and pattern of Bangkok elders’ work, and factors which influence their pay rate and their working decision. The study is divided into two sections. The first part is a descriptive research, using data from previous related studies, and holding focus-group meetings. The second part is an analysis of the data from the survey on Thai elder people in 2006, conducted by the National Statistical Office of Thailand by using Logit Model as a tool to analyze Bangkok elders’ working decision, and Maximum Likelihood Estimation to study the factors which affect the elders’ pay rate The study reveals that 20% of elders participate in labour force, mostly male and primarily educated. They mostly operate their own business, work 7-8 hours everyday, and recruit no employee. The focus-group meetings come to a conclusion that, if the job specification adjusted to suit aging people, there will be no obstacle to urging them into labor force; however, the extension of the bureaucrat’s retire age should be carefully speculated. The factors determining working decision of aged and aged-to-be are their age, sex, marital status, education, pension, savings and interest, government living allowance, debt, and how much they have to give to or receive from their children. The reasons which encourage elders to work the most are inadequate government living allowance, money give to descendant and good health respectively. The factors not convincing elders to participate workforce are pension, money earn from descendant, saving and interest. Additionally, the study shows age, sex, marital status, education, health, and occupation are factors that influence the elders pay rate statistically. Finally, the study also suggests that government should authorize measures and policies which suit to capability and need of the elders. Moreover, current labor forces are recommended to be prepared for elder period by building up saving in working age and develop their capacity continuously.
