The main purpose of this research is to investigate the progression of knowledge on 'Communication and Participation' by considering the definitions of 'Communication and Participation', areas of study, and research methodologies. This research is based on document analysis from 73 theses of 'Development Communication Program' between 1981-2005. These theses are from four graduate schools: Chulalongkorn University, Thammasat University, Dhurakitbundit University, and Kasetsat University. This research also used coding sheets and employed Meta-Analysis synthesis in quantitative methods and Meta-Ethnography analysis in qualitative methods. Results of the research are as follows: 1) The definition of 'Communication and Participation' is an interactive process characterized by different kinds of interaction between people such as, exchanging ideas and information, making decision, and planning for developing or solving problem in their community. 2) The most famous subject in this area of study is 'Communication for Environmental Development'. 3) The most widely used research methodology is a quantitative research employing survey research and questionnaire as major research tools. The main target of the research is people in Bangkok and suburb areas. In addition, most of them employed inferential Statistics to analysis data. 4) Most of quantitative studies emphasis on the relationship between different variables to the behavior of information receivers especially perceiving information and changing paradigm, attitude, and participating behavior. On the other hand, qualitative studies concentrate on the process of initiating participatory communication which has six characteristics. They are: (1) The communication is two-way. (2) The communication is two-step flow. (3) The main goal is to benefit people. (4) The communication is usually from/with respectful or famous people or specialists. (5) Messages of the participatory communication are usually problems in community, benefits for the community members which are closely related to the community members. (6) The level of participation of the population is elementary. The receivers are 'Passive Audiences' i.e., the audiences mainly receive information from the government.
