White's The Once and Future King / Sutinee Jamutai
The purpose of this thesis is to study and compare the application of King Arthur legend in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain and The Once and Future King by T.H. White. The legend of King Arthur that appears in Twain's and White's novel is based on History of the King of Britain by Geoffrey of Monmouth and Le Morte D'Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory. The study shows that although Twain and White similarly appropriate King Arthur legend for criticizing their societies, theirs works differ in details due to their difference in social, cultural, and political context. In A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, Twain reveals American pride in advanced technology and American desire for independence from the motherland. However, he criticizes certain beliefs and practices of his time such as careless use of technology, imperialism, the abuse of power by Roman Catholic Church and feudalism, and the cruelty of slavery. In The Once and Future King , White calls for the improvement of children's education based on love and experience and for the end of tyranny of communism and war.
