The purposes of this time series quasi-experimental research were to compare post operative recovery of adolescent patients who received the preoperative education and postoperative exercise program and those who had routine nursing care. Samples consisted of 40 adolescent patients who received the upper abdominal surgery for diagnosis or treatment at Lopburi hospital. They were matched and randomly assigned into either experiment or control group. There were 20 in each group. The experimental instruments were the preoperative education and postoperative exercise program which had tested for content validity. The instrument for data collection was the postoperative recovery evaluation form which obtained reliability of .98. Data were analyzed by using mean, standard deviation and independent t-test. Major findings were as follows : 1. The mean score of postoperative recovery on postoperative pain dimension between the experimental group and the control group was not significantly different on the first day.But there were significant differents between groups on the second and third days, at the .05 level. 2. The mean score of postoperative recovery on postoperative ambulation dimension between the experimental group and the control group were significant different on the first, second and third days at the .05 level. 3. The mean score of postoperative recovery on postoperative analgesic used dimension between the experimental group and the control group were significant different on the first, second and third days at the .05 level. 4. The mean score of postoperative recovery on postoperative complication dimension between the experimental group and the control group were significant different on the first, second and third days at the .05 level. The results suggested that the pre-operative education and postoperative exercise program can improve postoperative recovery of adolescent patients and should be integrated as part of postoperative nursing care.
