Hospitalization is one of the major sources of fear in preschool children which lead to children's uncooperation with medical-nursing treatment, behavioral problems, emotional distress, as well as delayed growth and development. Reducing fear in hospitalized preschool children is thus necessary. The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the effect of preparation for hospitalization on fear of preschool patients. Subjects were 32 preschool patients, ranging in age from 3 to 6, admitted to Queen Sirikit National Inistute of Child Health and Samutsakorn Hospital. Subjects were assigned into experimental and control groups by random assignment and matched pair technique. The experimental group received information about reasons for hospitalization, separation from parents, routines and procedures at admission through role play and parental participation. The information was given in terms appropriate to children' s age. This preparation was provided at OPD before admission to the pediatric units. The control group received routine preparation by staff nurses. Children' s fear during admission situation was collected by the Fear Behavior Scale developed by the researcher. Its content validity and interrater reliability were established prior data collection. Data were analyzed by t test dependent. It was found that fear of preschool patients receiving preparation for hospitalization was significantly less than that of the control group, at the .05 level.
