This research was divided into 2 parts, descriptive and qualitative research. Study 1 investigated 1). hope and coping strategies of college students, 2). the effects of student's gender, year of study, field of study and academic achievement on their hope and coping strategies and 3).the relationships between hope and coping strategies. Participants were 509 undergraduate students. Hope was determined using a Domain Specific Hope Scale and student coping strategies were assessed using a Coping Scale. Data was analyzed using a three-way ANOVA design followed by post-hoc multiple comparisons with Dunnett'sT3 test and a pearson's product-moment correlation coefficients. The major findings were as follows : 1. The students had moderately high hope and the students with high and moderate academic achievement had higher hope than those with low academic achievement. 2. The students used more effective means of coping : problem-focused and social support seeking strategies and used ineffective means of coping, avoidance strategies, moderately. 3. Female students used more social support seeking and avoidance strategies than male students. 4. Students with high and moderate academic achievement used more problem-focused strategies than those with low academic achievement and students with high academic achievement used more social support seeking strategies than those with low academic achievement. 5. Hope had positive relationships with problem-focused and social support seeking strategies, but no relationships between hope and avoidance strategies were found. Study 2, qualitative research with in-depth interview for investigating hope of college students with high and low academic achievement. Twenty of the 509 undergraduate students in study 1 were selected as sample. The results were as follows: Students with high academic achievement had high hope, difficult goals, high agency, and had various pathways to their goals, and used effective means of coping. Students with low academic achievement had goals, but low agency and had less pathways to their goals, and used both effective and ineffective means of coping.
