To study the Thai-Mon housing pattern of the Bangkradee community in Bangkhunthian district in Bangkok Metropolis, especially their cultures and paternal society affecting the housing pattern. The study was done through interviews of six ancient families regarding changes in family structure and changes in housing structure. The results of the study show that the housing pattern of the Thai-Mon in Bangkradee community is influenced by the beliefs of ancestral spirits and auspicious directions (points on the compass). This results in the following:The expansion from households to a community of Thai-Mon in Bangkradee is influenced by the familial system connected by blood, and respect to the same ancestral spirits. The construction of the house still relies largely on the belief on auspicious directions. The long side of the house is orientated to the sun; the gable is to the east and the west (facing the sun); the stairs leading up the house are on the south and the east. Importance is also placed on the orientation of the head bed ( to the east and the south) The house owner's bedroom, which houses the ancestral spirit post, must be raised to a higher level than the other rooms in the house. The belief in ancestral spirits and the continuation of family lineage by the son is reflected in the erection of partitions to create new rooms for extended family. The area downstairs which used to be an open space is partitioned to create an additional bedroom, a kitchen and a bathroom. From the study, the researcher has found the difference between the position of the principal house post. The principal house post, or the ancestral spirit post, is the second column in the house, which is different from other Thai-Mon communities elsewhere. In conclusion, the Thai-Mon settlement in Bangkradee community is unique in Thai society, as it is not just an art of architecture, but also reflects social and cultural values of the community. The housing pattern clearly reflects the thoughts and ideology about the social interactions between the members in the family, filial system and the relationship of the people in the community who share the same culture. These will lead to the development towards a sustainable community in the future.
