To explore the opinions of the sixth year medical students concerning two aspects of Universal Coverage Health Insurance Policy (UC) : indicators and core package. Data were collected by mailing self-administered questionnaire to 753 sixth year medical students all over the country during December 2002-February 2003. Total 555 sixth year medical students completed the questionnaire (73.7% response rate). Data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Spearman's Rank Correlation Coefficient. The study results showed that the majority of the subject were female (55.9%) with an average age of 23.5 years. Most of them resided in the central region (40.4%) and municipal area (87.5%). In addition, 72.1% of them had family health care privilege and 82.5% were financially supported by their families. 34% aimed to work in regional/general hospitals after their graduation, and 86.1% planned to seek further training in type 2 specialties (obstetrics-gynecology, internal medicine, pediatrics, and surgery) in the future. Their opinions toward the UC's indicators ranged from moderate to high (3.84 on average), and those toward the UC's core packages were also from moderate to high, and were 3.50 on average for medical treatment and rehabilitation package and 4.06 on average for health promotion and disease prevention package. Further analyses showed that the student's opinions toward the UC's indicators and core packages were statistically different (p<0.05) depending on the source they had learned about UC in theory. The author suggests that there should be an orientation /seminar /lecture about theoretical and practical aspects of the UC for the sixth year medical students, to enable them to have a better understanding, attitude, and more effective performance during their medical practice after graduation
