คำเรียกญาติของชาวไทยมุสลิมที่มีเชื้อสายต่างกันในกรุงเทพมหานคร / วราภรณ์ ติระ = Kinship terms used by Thai Muslims of different ethnic origins in Bangkok / Waraphorn Tira
To carry out a componential analysis of the basic and non-basic kinship terms used by Thai muslims of different ethnic origins and to point out significant characteristics of Thai muslims' culture as reflected in the systems of the kinship terms. The data used in this study was elicited from informants of three ethnic origins in Bangkok : the Malay, the Cham-Khmer, and the Persian Thai muslims. The results of the study show that the basic kinship terms of all the three ethnic groups make use of different dimensions of contrast. The basic kinship terms of the Malay Thai muslims have five dimensions of contrast : generation, lineality, age, sex, and restpect. The basic kinship terms of the Cham-Khmer Thai muslims have six dimensions of contrast, five of which are the same as the Malay Thai muslim group with the dimension of parental link added. The basic kinship terms of the Persian Thai muslims have five dimensions of contrast, which are exactly the same as the Thai basic kinship terms : generation, lineality, age, sex, and parental link. As for non-basic kinship terms, all the three ethnic groups make use of the same eight dimensions of contrast as in the Thai non-basic kinship terms : generation, lineality, age, sex, parental link, sex of the speaker, euphemism, and new marriage. With regard to the reflection of culture in the kinship terms, the analysis shows that seniority and patriarchy are significant cultural characteristics. This agrees with the observations reported in sociological and anthropological research on Thai muslims. However, concerning patriarchy it is found that this cultural trait seems to be in the process of becoming less significant. Also, several other cultural characteristics of all the three ethnic groups have changed to become more Thai with different degree. It is concluded that among the three groups, the most conservative is the Malay Thai muslim group. The second most is the Cham-Khmer Thai muslim group. The least conservative is the Persian Thai muslims.
