The objectives of this thesis are to study Orientalism and to analyze the ways used to present Orientalism in narrative and film Little Buddha. The study shows that there are 5 kinds of Orientalism by Edward Said in the novel and film, namely the idea that the East is inferior to the West, the idea that the West has the right to change the East, the idea that the East is the land of searching for spiritual answer, the idea that the image of the East depends on texts and the idea that the East is an imitation of the West. And the idea of Orientalism in the novel and film is presented through following 9 literary devices : the adaptation of Eastern philosophy in the same way as Western philosophy, the use of omniscient point of view, the use of static characters, the use of comparison, the use of happy ending, the use of main plot and subplot, the use of theatricalism, the use of fantasy and the use of cinematic compositions. These literary devices are all related one another in order to present the author's Orientalism, which is popular culture according to the style of most of Hollywood film. And these make the images of the East in narratives and films become the distorted images so that the East will turn into what the West desires it to be in accordance with Orientalism in subconscious mind of Western people called Latent Orientalism. Realizing the discourse the West has towards the East will help us to be more careful to consume the works of the West such as literature, film, writing or other forms of media so that Eastern people will not become occupied by Western idea, culture, economy or politics etc., which gradually and continually occupy the East according to the trend of globalization and so that we will not forget our root, either.
