To design an instructional process by applying problem-based learning approach to enhance mathematical competencies of prathom suksa five gifted students. This study was consisted of two stages. The first stage involves the designing of the instructional process. The second stage is to test the designed instructional process. The quasi-experimental design was used in the study. The research instruments were teacher nomination form, mathematical ability test and mathematical competencies test. The sample was consisted of fifteen grade five mathematical gifted students at Payatai school in academic year 2002. The data were analyzed by the t-test. The research findings were as follows : 1. The designed instructional process consists of seven steps : setting up the problem, connecting with the problem, preparing study framework, doing group work, choosing a solution, producing a product , and evaluating learning outcome. 2. When the designed instructional process was implemented with the sample, it was found that the designed instructional process could develop the problem solving and connection skills significantly higher than criteria (20% of total score). the reasoning skill equal to the criteria and the communication and representation skill lower than the criteria at the .05 level. The designed instructional process was improved by adding teacher's roles on developing reasoning, communication and representation skill.
