The objectives of this research were to investigate business models of service units of state enterprises and private companies and to develop profit-centered business models for academic support service units of public autonomous universities. The population and samples were six state enterprises, two private companies and 10 public and private universities which offer services needed by the public and which have profit-centered business models for service and support units. Policies and profit-centered business models were studied through document analysis, structured interviews of executives and a business model survey for 165 support service units of 43 universities. The executives who were selected for interview were from academic support service units which the survey showed had profit-centered business models. The findings of the research were that the proposed profit-centered business models for academic support service units of public autonomous universities were comprised of enterprise policies of the university council, business measures of the university, and a profit-centered business model for academic support service units having performance assessment, compensation, effectiveness, reporting of performance, support for academic development of the university, and cooperation with internal and external agencies that benefit administration of the unit so that it is able to be financially self-sufficient and to produce income for the university. Three business models are proposed: a bureaucratic model, a semi-bureaucratic model, and private business model.
