To study the culture - specific word recognition strategies used by mathayom suksa five students in the educational region one and to investigate the differences among three English reading comprehension abilities groups ; namely, advanced, intermediate, and low reading levels in their strategy use of the culture - specific word recognition. A total of 60 mathayom suksa five students were asked to take the culture - specific word recognition strategies test which was constructed by the researcher and approved by five specialists. The students verbalized their thoughts, using the think-aloud technique. The data were tape recorded, transcribed, then coded by the researcher and two research assisstants. Chi-square analysis and one-way analysis of variance were performed to test the hypotheses. The results of this study were as follows; 1.Mathayom suksa five stidents significantly differed in their text-initiated, interactive, and reader-initated strategy use of the culture-specific word recongnition at the .05 level. the results also indicated that mathayom suksa five students used the reader - intitiated word recognition strategies more frequently than any other strategies. They reported that they used the least interactive word recognition strategies. 2. Mathayom suksa five students with advanced, intermediate, and low English reading comprehension abilities significantly differed in their use of both the text-initiated word recogniting strategies and the reader-initiated word recognition strategies at the .05 level. The result demonstrated that there was no statistically difference in their reported use of the interactive word recognition strategy.
