SUMMARY
Research shows that women's incomes go to meeting their families' basic needs. Thus, enhancing the capacity of women from low income and asset-poor households to generate income at decent levels, is an important element in any strategy to promote economic development. The Programme of Action adopted in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) by representatives from the public and private sector, non-governmental organizations and the United Nations system identified several areas of action, namely creating a favourable policy and legal environment, facilitating and increasing access to finance, technology and business development services, and creating awareness of the contribution of women to economic development.
