Abstract: This is a background paper to the Meeting on Portfolio Investment Flows and Foreign Direct Investment. It provided detailed information and analysis on determinants and development impact of foreign direct investment and foreign portfolio investment. It also gave a brief review of statistical problems regarding FDI and FPI. Policy implications for handling capital flows and foreign investment regimes were also discussed in the paper.
