SUMMARY

Abstract: The Document contains the Final Act and the text of the International Convention on Arrest of Ships 1999, adopted by the United Nations/International Maritime Organization Diplomatic Conference on Arrest of Ships on 12th March 1999. The Convention aims at providing a widely acceptable legal instrument promoting international trade and transport, by striking a balance between the interests of the owners of cargo and of ships in securing the free movement of ships and the right of the claimant to obtain security for his claim. The text of the Convention is deposited with the Secretary-General of the United Nations. The Convention will enter into force six months after the date on which ten States have expressed their consent to be bound by it
