SUMMARY

This book aims at increasing the understanding of the Agreement on Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) in developing countries in general, and in the least developed countries in particular, in support of their policy efforts on intellectual property rights (IPR) and the establishment of arrangements conducive to the implementation of the TRIPS Agreement. Its main thrust is that developing countries should be aware of the full implications of the Agreement so that they would structure their implementation and their IPR systems in a way that enhances dynamic competition and is consistent with their development objectives. This study was commissioned by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which invited UNCTAD to analyse the financial and other implications of the TRIPS Agreement for developing countries.
