SUMMARY

This report was prepared for consideration by the Economic and Social Council and the General Assembly, at its special session in 1997. It examines concrete progress achieved on the issue of trade and environment since the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). It focuses on progress achieved in meeting the objectives of Agenda 21 with regard to international cooperation to accelerate sustainable development in developing countries and related domestic policies. In particular, it examines progress in promoting sustainable development through trade and in making trade and environment mutually supportive, and highlights some outstanding issues which emerge from the post-UNCED debate
