SUMMARY

Summary: There exists widespread evidence that the East Asian model of economic development is considerably different from the neoclassical one. This paper formulates (non-mathematically) the East Asian model of economic development and examines how two economies, the Republic of Korea and Taiwan Province of China, had transformed stagnant and underdeveloped economies into rapidly growing, modern economies. The primary focus of this study is on the 1950s and 1960s -- the period of economic take-off. There is more than one road to economic development; the East Asian approach has proven itself to be one viable option
