To analyze and developo community education models for sustainable development. Structural-Functionalism concepts were applied as guidelines for analyzing the collected data obtained from document study of selected 6 community education programs and field research in 2 communities. Focus-group discussion, in-depth interview and non-participatory observation were employed. Using expert judgement, the community education models for sustainable development were examined and proposed. Research findings were as follows 1. Unsustainable development in the communities was the result of environmental problems affected by economic and social development. The communities, as a social system, lost equilibrium and adapted themselves by prioritizing community education programs as means to solve the problems. The programs enhanced social integration through community participation in planning and management. Solving the environmental problems and benefits of the community-at-large were set as goals of the education programs. 2. The community education programs for sustainable development might be developed in 2 models; namely, the community-based model and the institution-based model. The community-based model was utilized in the community which had strong leadership and some degree of potentialities. This model emphasized self-reliance method with the use of community participation, local resources and wisdom. Community-initiated education programs aimed at developing community members' learning skills and abilities in solving unsustainable development problems. The institution-based model was employed in the community where the scope of existing problems were far beyond the abilities of its members. In order to solve the problems, the community needed assistance from outside. Recognized authorities such as international organizations, government agencies and the Office of the Royal Development Projects initiated community programs in which education activities also encouraged learning process, abilities, and participation of the local members with the hope that they would have sufficient potentials for solving community problems.
