To study the inferencing strategies used in reading Thai language and compare the inferencing ability in reading Thai language of mathayom suksa five students among groups using different inferencing strategies. The samples of this research were 597 mathayom suksa five students in secondary schools under the Department of General Education, Bangkok Metropolis in the academic year 2000, selected by using the multi-stage random sampling technique. The research instruments were the inferencing strategies in reading Thai Language Questionnaire which was modified from that of Linda Philips Riggs by the researcher, and the inferencing ability in reading Thai Language test which was constructed by the researcher. The obtained data were analyzed by means of frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean, standard deviation and one-way analysis of variance. The results of the study were as follos : 1. The four inferencing strategies in reading Thai Language that mathayom suksa five students used the most to the least were the considering context strategy, the making conclusions from alternatives strategy, the relating content to experiences strategy and the text questioning strategy, respectively. 2. Mathayom suksa five students with different inferencing strategies had different inferencing ability in reading Thai Language at the .05 level of significance in four pairs, consisted of 1) abilities of those who used the considering context strategy and abilities of those who used the relating content to experiences strategy, 2) abilities of those who used the considering context strategy and abilities of those who used the text questioning strategy, 3) abilities of those who used the making conclusions from alternatives strategy and abilities of those who used the relating content to experiences strategy, and 4)abilities of those who used the making conclusions from alternatives strategy and abilities of those who used the text questioning strategy. 3. Mathayom suksa five students with different inferencing strategies had no different inferencing ability in reading Thai Language at the .05 level of significance in two pairs, consisted of 1) abilities of those who used the considering context strategy and abilities of those who used the making conclusions from alternatives strategy, and 2) abilities of those those who used the relating content to experiences strategy and abilities of those who used the text questioning strategy.
