การแก้ปัญหาพรมแดนทางบกระหว่างไทยและลาว / จันทรอร พงศ์พันธุ์ผู้ภักดี = Land border settlement between Thailand and Laos / Chan-Orn Bongsebandhu-Phubhakdi
This thesis dealed with the land border settlement between Thailand and Laos. The emphasis of this study is on the factors influencing Thailand and Laos to reach the border agreement in 1996. The study found that the border delineation between Thailand and Laos has been influenced by international environment in the colonial era. The treaties between Thailand and France had left the former in a disadvantageous position: the treaties were not in accordance with the international law and the demarcating of border cited in the treaties were not entirely achieved. After communism regime had gained power in 1975, Laos was dominated by the USSR and Vietnam. While Laos depended on the USSR's economic assistance, in politics and in the military, Laos was dominated by Vietnam. As for Thailand, being conscious of the external threat, especially from Vietnam, she had to implement a policy depending on the US in security affairs. During the Cold War, Thailand and Laos could not find any solution on border disputes. However, in the post Cold War era, international environment was conducive to the promotion of good relations between the two countries. As a result, Thailand and Laos could successfully negotiate and establish joint committees in both governmental and local levels. Ultimately, the agreement to survey and demarcate their common land border was concluded.
