To explore psychological and social conditions of new patients who suffered from amphetamine use disorder and heroin use disorder. The subject of this study included 350 new patients who were treated in Thanyarak Hospital. The instrument consisted of social interview form and diagnostic interview for mental disorder. In-depth interview was conducted on 10 new patients. Percentage, mean, standard deviation, Mode, maximum and minimum were determined. Chi-square test, Fisher's Exact test and t-test were used for statistical analysis. All of data were analyzed with SPSS program. It was found that 302 patients used amphetamine and 48 patients used heroin. The average age that they started using drug was 16.58+_3.31 years (minimum = 11 years, maximum = 29 years). The average time that they started using drug until they got treatments was 26.61 +_17.72 months. Most of them, 62.6 percent, were encouraged using drug by peers. 94.7 percent, associated with peers who used drug. 91.7 percent, were educated about harmfulness of drug abuse. Almost all of them, 95.2 percent, could obtain drug within 10 minutes to 1 hour. Initiation age of amphetamine users that started using drug was significantly lower than heroin users (p-value<0.05). Drug using periods of amphetamine users were significantly lower than heroin users (p-value<0.05). Expenditure on drug of amphetamine users was significantly lower than heroin users (p-value<0.05). Mood disorder was the most prominent psychological problem in 51.4 percent of subjects. Manic disorder was the most common finding, 42.3 percent, follow by major depressive disorder, 34.9 percent. Amphetamine users were significantly more affected by panic attack and manic disorder than heroin users (p-value<0.05). In-depth interview revealed that factors related to amphetamine and heroin use disorder were as follow: family problems, low self esteem, peer drug use, encouragement by peers, available drug distribution in community and psychological problem. Most of patients need social acception in order to stop using drug.
