The paradigms in sustainable development and sustainable tourism have changed drastically at present, especially in ecotourism. Resort hotels which are created for commercial purpose are now more concerned about those movements. Thus, a new design and related methodology must be created as well as the new approach to tourism development. In fact, the concept of ecotourism and sustainable tourism development in terms of architecture still faces significant barriers and limitations. Its character and its identity are not quite identified. However, over the past 3-5 years the environmentally responsible design has been defined universally. General public and architects themselves are becoming more concerned in the environmental impact of the projects that they have created as can be seen in various awarded projects given by ASA (Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage) and Ministry of Science Technology and Environment. In the first place, previous research studies and related theories had been used as a guideline. Secondly, awarded projects related to this research topic had been used as case studies as well as the opinions of the project architects. Then the leading architects who were members of the ASA award committee, building users, and experts in environmentally conscious design had been interviewed to provide the information basis for structuring a comprehensive questionnaire. Finally, the questionnaire dissecting the awareness of architecture for ecotourism and sustainable tourism development were delivered to architects and general public, 150 sibkects om eacj group. The results show that both architects and the general public agree that the architecture for ecotourism and sustainable tourism development should be responsive to the environment and cultural contexts, local identity and should be properly integrated to environmental management technology. Furthermore, the design guidelines in term of architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture have to be appropriate to the given region and reflect the vernacular architecture. Passive methods of energy-conserving strategies regarding the local climate should be incorporated. The approach in using proper materials which can minimize the use of new resources and the ecological effect has to be considered in architectural design. As architects and the general public have expressed different points of view on the same issue due to their own perception and experiences, architects must allow the latter to participate in design procedures, so that their viewpoints would be taken into considerations.
