There is no difference in the opinions of the instructors of the eight universities surveyed concerning student personnel work in universities; 4. There is no difference in the opinions of the students of the eight universities surveyed concerning student personnel work in universities. Procedures Subjects for this study were selected from eight universi¬ties: Chulalongkorn University, Kasetsart University, Khonkaen University, Chiang Mai University, Thummasart University, Mahidol University, Srinakarinwirot University at Prasarnmit and Silpakorn University. Subjects were divided into two types: 1. Those who were interviewed, i.e. twenty four administra¬tors and student personnel work people; three persons were selected from each university. 2. Those who were asked to answer a questionnaire i.e. instructors involved in student personnel work for a total of 213, and students from the second up to the fourth year for a total of 737. This study is based on an analysis of data gathered from three sources: documents, interviews and questionnaires. Documents and interviews were analyzed by using content analysis; data from questionnaires were analyzed by using percentages, means, standard deviations, t-test and ANOVA (F-test) to test statistical significance of differences.
Research Conclusions 1. Characteristics and work areas of student personnel work in universities fall into three types: student activities; student welfare and services; and student discipline. There were many activities in student activities: for example:- public welfare activities; sport activities and cultural activities. Student welfare and services cover a broad area and involve many agencies; e.g. the Student Activities Division, Student Services Division, and the Central registrar. As for student discipline, it is con¬cerned with compiling student personnel data, with investigating violations of rules by the students; and fostering among students knowledge and good conduct. 2. Problems in student personnel work fall into three types: administration problems, instructor problems and student problems. 3. In testing the hypothesis set up for this research it was found that: there was no difference in the opinions of the students and of the instructors from the same university; instruc¬tors and students of the eight universities had differences of opinions; the instructors of the eight universities had differences opinions on student personnel work only in one area i.e. student welfare and services; students of the eight universities had different opinions. 4. Concerning the importance of student personnel work the students and the instructors of the eight universities gave ranking at the high and medium level. The highest ranking was for the item on electing the committee of the student union in a democratic way (student activities). 5. As for the situation and the quality of works, the majority of students' gave a ranking at the rather high level. There were some items where the ranking was at the very high level and low level. Recommendations On the basis of this research it is recommended that the eight universities should consider. and give importance to student personnel work in the three areas of student activities, student welfare and services and student discipline. For student activities the importance of electing officers according to a democratic model should be given importance. Student cultural activities should be improved. Information should be disseminated among instructors and students on activities and happenings within the university. Services to facilitate job placements should be offered to the students. Likewise, facilities for residence halls and for housing should be provided along with services to improve the quality of life. As for student discipline, university rules and regulations should be revised and a student development center should be established.
