Purpose The purpose of this research was to compare the English speaking achievement of English major teacher education students learning through dramatic activities and pattern practice. Procedures Subjects were two groups of the second year English major students in the academic year of 1982 of Chombung Village Teachers' College.. The first group, 22 students and the second group, 23 students were not significantly different in English foundation knowledge at the .01 level. The first was the experimental group learning through dramatic activities and the second was the control group learning through pattern practice. Both groups were taught by the researcher for 6 weeks, 24 periods per group The two classes were then orally tested, using the English speaking achievement test which had been analyzed to be reliable. The test results were then analysed to prove the reliability in scoring between the two scorers and were compared by using the T-test. Results 1. The English speaking achievement of the students learning through dramatic activities was significantly higher than those learning through pattern practice at the level of .01 in these areas : fluency, comprehensibility, amount of communication and effort to communicate and at the level of .05 in the area of the ability in describing pictures to the scorers to understand. 2. The English speaking achievement of the students learning through dramatic activities was not different from those learning through pattern practice in the areas of quality of communication and accent. 3. The total English speaking achievement of the students learning.through dramatic activities was significantly higher than those learning through pattern practice at the level of .01.
