The main purpose of this study was to investigate the interaction effects between interpresentation and retention intervals in continuous paired-associate memory in order to test the Selective Encoding Theory. The subjects of this experiment were 30 volunteer undergraduate students, fifteen males and fifteen females, at Chulalongkorn University in the academic year 1978. The instrument used in the experiment was a set of 56 Thai two-syllabled words, each pair associated with two-digited members. This set was divided into two subsets, a set consisting of 32 testing pairs and another consisting of 24 intervening pairs. The experimentation was done to the subject one by one by exposing him (her) to the set of pairs projected on a screen by a slide projector continually for 120 pairs under 16 conditions. Statistical analysis of the score obtained was done by ANOVA. The results were that. 1. There was no interaction effects between interpresentation and retention intervals. 2. Retention was not at best at equal interval of interpresentation and retention intervals.
