The purposes of this research were: (1) to survey the use or non-use of card catalogs and the cause of not using the catalog (2) to survey the type of card catalogs that users use most (3) to survey the use of items in card catalogs of the users of King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology, Thonburi Campus in the academic year 1983. The research methods used in this research were documentary research through books, periodicals, documents and other printed materials that concerned this research. The following data were obtained by sending 558 questionnaires to the students of King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology, Thonburi Campus, of which 531 (95%) were complete answered and returned. The results were: the majority of the students (77.59%) used the card catalogs as their tools to find the books and other printed materials they needed. There were students (22.41%) that didn’t use the card catalogs because they had already known the sites of the book shelves they needed. The other reason was they thought that the features of the books were easier to understand than the card catalogs. The card catalogs that the students use most is the title card. The items in the card catalogs that are used secondarily are call number, author, title and subject. Items that are not used are editor, corporate body as publisher and copyright date. The main recommendations from this research are as follows:- 1. The library should produce and inform the users the lists of the books that have not been on the shelves for a long time so as to get rid of their bad attitudes toward the use of the card catalog. Consequently, the card catalogs would be used more widely. 2. The cataloguers should pay their attention to the call number, the author, the title and the subject which are used secondarily. The shelf list cards for the users should not be provided anymore, but the accession number should be put in the title card since it is used the most and tracing areas should be included in the author cards. 3. The library should place the card catalog cabinets near the entrance in order that users could see them first when they entered the library. Besides, the library should install a large display containing all information about using all items in the card catalog on the top of the card catalog cabinets to make the users understand more how to use the card catalogs. 4. The library should try to standardize cataloguing rules in order to be useful for coordinating the union catalog with other group of libraries. 5. The library should produce a library handbook which contains essential information about the library, number of collections, and its services. 6. The institute should provide a course to teach the students how to use the library which will give the library skill for quick searching in library materials.
