The purpose of this thesis is to study the grammatical structure of the figures of speech in modern Thai literary prose, relating to simile and metaphor. The data are collected from approximately 30 selected books of Thai prose written during the reign of King Vajiravuth (Rama VI) up to the present day (B.E.2520) The similes and the metaphors are studied under five stages of grammatical structure. The study reveals the followings: a) sentence types : 2 types of sentences: simple and complex sentences; b) sentence constituents : 5 sentence constituents functioning in the simple sentence and only four of them functioning in the complex sentence; c) sentence structure : 4 patterns of sentence structure in the simile and 5 patterns in the metaphor; d) phrase types : 2 types of phrases : noun phrases and verb phrases; e) phrase constituents : 5 constituent types of noun phrase and 3 of verb phrase in a simple sentence, and only 4 and 3 constituent types of noun and verb phrase respectively in a complex sentence; f) phrase structure : 5 patterns of structure of noun phrase and 4 patterns of verb phrase in a simply sentence, and only 4 patterns of both noun phrases and verb phrases in a complex sentence; g) word-classes : 17 word-classes in both simple and complex sentences. These may be divided into 4 mail word-classes and 13 function words, the latter of which may be subdivided into 10 modifying classes and 3 linkers. The thesis consists of 6 chapters : Chapter 1 : Introduction, in which scope and purpose are stated. Chapter 2 : The characteristics of figures of speech, and how they are applied in Thai. Chapter 3 : The grammatical structure of similes and metaphors in both simple and complex sentences. Chapter 4 : The types and structures of phrases in similes and metaphors. Chapter 5 : The word-classes found in simile and metaphors. Chapter 6 : Conclusion and Further Research. Further research should be undertaken on similar constructions, for example, proverbs, which have limited patterns of structure as similes and metaphors.
