The aim and object of the present thesis are to study the concept and practice of Chakravartin Kingship as found in Pali and Sanskrit literature. Chakravartin Kingship was the ideal system of administration originally expounded and practiced in ancient India. The idea, along with Hindu and Buddhist culture, spread to many parts of the world including Siam. That the Thais in Siam have been influenced by the concept of Chakravartin Kingship from the very beginning of their corporate life in the land now known as Thailand, can be seen in many of our ancient books and chronicles. The Tri Bhum Phra Ruang (or TE BHUMI KATHA), one of the earliest literary works of the Thais, bears ample evidence to this fact. Right through our history we have writings, both in verse and prose, extolling the virtues of Chakravartin Kings. As a matter of fact many of our popular kings and rulers have been referred to by the little of “Chakrapat” which is the Thai derivation of the Sanskrit “Cakravartin”.
