This study aimed at finding the relationship between the communicative role of the border patrol police commanders and the morale of their force within the platoons under risk-prone mission, situated in harsh-conditioned areas in the Second Area of the Border Patrol Police Command. The sample selected for use in this study was six platoons of border patrol police; the first three located around provinces' or regions' adjacents; the last three stationed along the Kampuchea border line. These six platoons hold the top six ranks of the most risk-prone platoons situated in harsh-conditioned areas in the Second Area of the Border Patrol Police Command. With regard to the communication aspects, the researcher arrived at forming the variables through 11 border patrol police specialists, with aditional Suggestion from his academic advisor in conjunction with his own past experience. With regard to the morale aspects, the researcher accumulated them from previous research reports, specifically done or morale tonics, for use as guidelines in this study. Data were collected through questionnaires, especially 183 most complete ones or 87.14% of the sample group. The research was based on the following six hypotheses: 1. Salaries and per diem, welfare service, training, personal visits by commanders and communications from the platoon commanders are relevant to the morale of the subordinates in the risk-prone units situated in harsh-conditioned areas. 2. The communication of the platoon commanders, charac¬terized by the modes of communication, formal and informal, in the platoon units, are statistically significant. 3. The communication of the platoon commanders toward their subordinates, characterized by the four methods of communication, namely: organized group communication, unorganized group communication, face-to-face communication, and two-step flow of communication, in the border patrol police platoons, are not statistically significant.
4. If divided according to the levels of morale (high, middle, low), there will be statistically significant differences, as follows: a) there are differences between the modes of formal and informal communications from the platoon commanders toward their subordinates of high, middle and low morale. b) There are statistically significant differences among the four methods of communication, namely: organized group, unorganized group, face-to-face, and two-step flow communications. 5. There are no statistically significant differences in the modes and the methods of communication between the Border Patrol Police Platoons situated between the provinces' or regions' adjacents and situated along the Border line. 6. Characterized by the methods and modes of communication, each communication pattern is related to the morale of the Border Patrol Police at different levels of importance. According to the testing of the hypotheses, hypotheses No.2, No.3, No.4 and No.6 were accepted. However, the first hypotheses proved that communication of the platoon commanders significantly correlated only with morale of the subordinates. Also, for the fifth hypotheses, the method of the informal organized group communication and the method of the informal two-step flow of communication are. Statistically significant among the different Border Patrol Police platoons located .in these two areas. In addition, the researcher found that the formal organized group communication of the platoon commanders are of basic importance and are most indicative of the morale level of the force unit. The least indicative of the morale is the formal two-step flow of communication method. Based on the results of this study, the researcher suggested the proper use of communication by the platoon commanders in order to result in upholding the morale of the Border Patrol Police of the Second Area of the Border Patrol Police Command.
