The purpose of this research was to study the relationship between socio-economic, home environmental factors, students factors, school factors and reading habits by the way of explaining variance and prediction. A sample consisted of 974 students of Mathayom Suksa One which was randomly selected through out the Bangkok Metropolis. The questionnaires on reading habits, socio-economic status, home and school environment were used to collect the data. Stepwise multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the obtained data. The data were analyzed by the computer program SPSS-X. The major findings were as follows:- 1. The predictors which made positive correlation with reading habits were home and school promotion for motiviating reading, frequency of buying magazine and newspaper and father’s level of education. For socio-economic, home environmental factors, i.e. , frequency of buying magazines, father’s level of education, father’s occupation-profession, frequency of buying newspaper, type of resident-town house, father’s occupation-civil service, and mother’s occupation-employee were the best predictors and altogether explained 12 percent of the variance in reading habits. 3. For students factors, i.e. , home and school promotion for motiviating reading, the most favourite T.V. program-news, child and cartoons, films or drama, and times helping to do housework per week were the best predictors and taken together explain 36 percent of the variance in reading habits. 4. Concerning school factors: the number of newspaper and magazines that are subscribed, library’s climate, library’s area/student ratio, number of books/student ratio were the best predictors and could explain 8 percent of the variance in reading habits. 5. If we considered the three groups of factors together, home promotion for motiviating reading was the most powerful predictors in explaining variance of reading habits, followed respectively in importance by frequency of buying magazines, school promotion for mativiating reading, the most favourite T.V. program-news, times helping to do housework per week, father’s occupation-civil service, the most favourite T.V. program-games show, father’s occupation-profession, number of persons living in the house, time-service of library per day and the most favourite T.V. program-child and cartoons.
